What Is ABA Parent Training?
ABA parent training is a structured, evidence-based program in which a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) teaches parents and caregivers the principles and techniques of Applied Behavior Analysis so they can effectively support their child’s learning and development at home. Rather than leaving parents as observers of their child’s therapy, parent training makes you an active participant, and ultimately, your child’s most consistent and powerful therapist.
At Belong ABA Therapy, parent training is integrated into every family’s program from day one. Your BCBA doesn’t just work with your child, they work with you.
Why Parents Are Essential to ABA Success
Even the most intensive ABA therapy program represents a fraction of your child’s waking hours. A child receiving 20 hours of ABA therapy per week still spends approximately 80–100 waking hours with family and caregivers. What happens during those remaining hours profoundly shapes whether therapy skills are maintained, generalized, and built upon.
Research consistently demonstrates that children whose parents actively implement ABA strategies at home:
- Acquire new skills significantly faster than children whose therapy is confined to clinical settings
- Show better generalization of skills across people, places, and contexts
- Maintain skills more effectively over time
- Experience fewer behavioral challenges at home as parents learn to respond consistently
- Develop stronger parent-child bonds through positive, structured interactions
In short: parent training multiplies the effectiveness of every therapy hour your child receives.
What Skills and Techniques Are Taught
Belong ABA’s parent training curriculum is customized to each family’s child and goals, but typically covers:
Reinforcement Strategies
How to use praise, preferred items, and activities effectively to motivate your child and strengthen desired behaviors.
Prompting & Prompt Fading
How to give the right level of help to support skill acquisition, and how to gradually fade your assistance so your child becomes independent.
Managing Challenging Behavior
Understanding the function of challenging behavior (why it happens) and responding in ways that do not inadvertently reinforce it, while teaching appropriate alternatives.
Communication Support
Strategies to support your child’s communication development, whether they use speech, AAC devices, picture systems, or sign language.
Routine & Structure
Building predictable daily routines that reduce anxiety, improve transitions, and create natural teaching opportunities throughout the day.
Data Collection Basics
Simple ways to track your child’s progress at home so your BCBA can use that information to fine-tune the treatment plan.
How Parent Training Sessions Are Structured
Parent training at Belong ABA typically follows this format:
- Frequency: Most families participate in 1–2 parent training sessions per month, in addition to more informal coaching during regular therapy sessions.
- Format: Sessions are conducted in your home (or via telehealth if preferred) and last 60–90 minutes.
- Content: Your BCBA reviews your child’s current goals and progress, teaches you a specific skill or strategy, models it with your child, and then coaches you as you practice it.
- Feedback: Real-time, supportive coaching from your BCBA as you implement strategies, this is the most effective form of parent training, far superior to reading a handout.
- Homework: Between sessions, you will practice specific skills with your child and report back to your BCBA at the next meeting.
How Parent Training Pairs With Child ABA Therapy
Parent training is most powerful when it runs alongside your child’s direct ABA therapy. Here is how they work together:
- Your child’s BCBA ensures parent training strategies are directly aligned with the goals your child is currently working on in therapy
- Parents implement the same strategies at home that RBTs use during sessions, creating consistency across all environments
- As your child achieves goals in therapy, you learn how to practice and maintain those skills naturally at home
- Parent feedback from home environments helps the BCBA identify challenges that don’t appear in therapy sessions

Frequently Asked Questions
Is parent training covered by insurance?
Yes, in most cases. Parent training is a recognized component of ABA therapy and is covered under the same ABA benefit as direct therapy hours for most commercial insurance plans. Our team will verify your specific coverage during the intake process.
Do I need to participate if my child is already in ABA therapy?
While parent training is not always mandatory, it is strongly recommended and built into all Belong ABA programs. Families who invest time in parent training consistently see better and faster outcomes for their children. Your BCBA will work with your schedule and comfort level to make training as accessible as possible.
What if I don’t have a background in ABA, will I understand the techniques?
Absolutely. Our BCBAs are skilled at translating complex behavioral science into plain, practical language and real-life examples. You do not need any prior knowledge of ABA. Everything is taught step-by-step, with hands-on practice and support. Many parents are surprised by how intuitive ABA strategies feel once they understand the logic behind them.
Can both parents or other caregivers participate in training?
Yes, and we encourage it. Consistency across caregivers is one of the most important factors in ABA success. We welcome both parents, grandparents, and other regular caregivers to participate in training sessions. The more consistently your child’s environment applies the same strategies, the faster and more durable their progress will be.
